He was well-read, although he had little schooling. His father, Alexander Theodore Hazle, was a man who loved books, and D followed his example. A hardworking man, D became a shoemaker and married a woman named Mavis Brissett from Cascade, Hanover. From the union, they produced two boys, Wilton and Frank, and two girls Vangella and Muffett. Later, he was employed with BOAC as a Ramp Attendant and transferred to Air Jamaica from where he eventually retired after making his indelible mark on the c

Darius Hazle

was born on January 29th, 1923, the third son of Alexander Theodore Hazle (1887-1949) and Effie Dora (Wellington) Hazle (1892-1967) in Cold Spring, Hanover, Jamaica, W.I. There was nothing remarkable about his birth as far as anyone knows, but had anyone told his parents that he would live to be a centenarian, they probably would have laughed.

Spiritual Life

Three months after the death of his father Alexander Theodore Hazle, Darius along with four of his siblings Wilmore, Urel, Dorrel, and Hortense, was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses at the convention that was held at the Court House in Montego Bay on Sunday, September 4, 1949. He served as an elder in the Mt, Salem, Montego Bay Congregation and maintained his faith in the promised resurrection.

Early Life
As a young man, Darius tried his hands at various tasks. He became skilled at making baskets from thatch. He made fairly good money as a sawyer, but he eventually settled with being a shoemaker for a while. Little known fact is that he was a Gleaner Correspondent. Eventually, D ventured beyond what seemed to be his calling as a shoemaker and he found work as a waiter in a great house. He was deemed a man of integrity when his employers tasked him with managing the house while they were away for an extended period of time. Upon their return, they were shocked to see that not even a fork was missing from the home. The mistress of the house had faith in him to recommend him for a job at the newly built Montego Bay Airport.

He was employed with BOAC as a Ramp Attendant and transferred to Air Jamaica from where he eventually retired after making his indelible mark on the company.

Mr. Hazle became well-known at the Sangster International Airport as a man of principle and was active as a Union Delegate where he advocated for benefits like uniform and meal allowances for employees. He was trained to work on the Concorde when it made its historic flight to Montego Bay, Jamaica. He became an invaluable resource for the ramp workers he supervised as a Lead Ramp Attendant.

In his small district of Shepperd’s Hall and the surrounding districts in the Great Valley region of Hanover, there was not much room for growth and Darius was an ambitious young man. He had not had a chance to complete school in Sixth Book because the lame leg caused him to drop out in Fifth Book. Making it to Sixth Book gave a young student a chance at becoming a teacher or entering a worthwhile profession. It was a chance at leaving a small country district for great possibilities. He watched as other young men his age went off to do great (and not so great) things. Some had gone off to join the RAF, but D was stuck nursing a sore leg. He missed out on the Farm Workers Program and other opportunities for advancement because of the sore leg. Despite this, he was determined within himself to make something of his life.
Chigwell to Montego Bay
While Darius worked at the Airport in Montego Bay, his wife Mavis remained at home in Chigwell; however, in 1962, the recurrent flooding at Chigwell reached an unprecedented scale, threatening the health and safety of the family. Darius and his wife then decided to move the family to Montego Bay.
Life in Mt. Salem
They settled in Mt Salem where they bought a house on Frances Isabelle Rd. From a settlement, called the Providence Fund, that he received through an agreement between BOAC and the newly formed Air Jamaica, he was able to pay off his mortgage for the house. He arrived in Kingston one day and proudly turned over his manager’s check that represented his final payment. After a number of technical issues concerning the master title, he received his title, providing the stability his family needed to thrive. He proceeded to expand the house to comfortably accommodate the family’s needs. In Mt Salem, he was known as a strong, no-nonsense man who was always ready to help. To his family, he was a provider par excellence who never came home without something in his hand. Saturday mornings were always special. Whatever was in season (mango, cane, guinep), he would bring home for his children. They would stay up at night awaiting his return from work and it was always a thrill when he traveled because he was sure to bring back “goodies from foreign.”

Obituary

DARIUS HAZLE- late of Frances Isabelle Rd., Mt. Salem, passed away peacefully on Monday January 13th, 2024, age 101, leaving behind his children Wilton Hazle, Franklin Hazle, Vangella Hazle Buchanan, and Muffett Hazle Adams to mourn their loss. Preceded in death by his wife Mavis (nee Brissett), he also leaves grandchildren Ray Thomas, Rashelle Alexander, Stuart Buchanan, Travis Alexander, and Calvin Hazle. Darius also leaves behind his sister Allinda (98), brother Dorrel (92), and countless nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, and other relatives.

Funeral service will be on Wednesday, January 29th, 2025, at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 54 Vernon’s Drive, Mt Salem at10am. Interment at Hillview Memorial Gardens, Moor Park.
